How to be a savvy sale shopper

by precious

The Sale has started and it’s all too tempting, but often I hear people say that they buy items in the sale that they then don’t wear. So how do you become a successful sale shopper – we know many of them who are very stylish dressers, and yet are very savvy when it comes to shopping for their wardrobes.

So why do we (retaillers) put things into the sale? In our case space- but the wheel of fashion moves on and lots of other lovely pieces we are going to love equally are about to be delivered. We also know that you (our loyal and lovely customers) will want to come in and see fresh new stock in the shop next season – but stay with me here…

DVF blouse £265 now £165 a "last one" of a fabulous style

Last ones – single items are often just the last pieces of a best seller – if it’s your size and a good deal then my advice is snap it up!

The same dress on!

Malene Birger Alecia dress £220 to £110 no hanger appeal – but look at it on!

Hanger appeal – very often a style may look great on but not so great on the hanger – I can’t tell you how many times these styles end up in the sale, and when they start to be tried on and look great and positively fly out! It’s all very frustrating for the retailer who believed in the style and maybe got a bit carried away with buying too many of that piece.

Cheap & Chic fitted jacket £469 to £359 - a classic wardrobe staple

Basics – if you can find them always a good buy – these are the core wardrobe pieces, black skirts, trousers, jeans knits and layering tops. The building blocks that we all need in our wardrobes, and again often last ones in this category are often to be found in the sale.

So for savvy sale shopping remember the following:

  1. Always have a list of wardrobe gaps in your mind when sale shopping. This can help guide you towards the area you really could benefit from, do you currently need knitwear, a new coat, things for work or a party dress?
  2. Be adventurous and try a style you might not ordinarily go for. After all it’s the opportunity to experiment a bit and try something out of your usual comfort zone at a reduced price.
  3. If you’ve had your eye on something during the season, now is the time to check it out again, do you still love it as much? If you do then snap it up it’s going to become a wardrobe favourite.
  4. Always try items on. Not just because most shops will not refund or exchange sale items, but because you never know until you see it on – it’s back to the hanger appeal thing! So give it a try
  5. Have fun!

Happy Shopping!!
