Tune into tobacco

There’s a new colour to focus on this Spring. Shown most notably at the opening of the DVF spring 11 show, a rich, warm brown print was the opening look. Now girls, dont’ panic we are not suggesting head to toe print for the office….but this new colour trend is set to roll. Having started for Spring 11 all these gorgeous warm shades are running into Fall too.

Another DVF favourite shows tonal colour blocking, with that rich warm tobacco colour coat, and other designers including Malene Birger, Carven and Moschino have all tapped into this trend, featuring warm, rich, earthy colours in their Spring 11 collections.

And it seems rather fitting that we should turn towards these warm, early rather luxurious colours which are such a perfect lift while the skies are grey. So start thinking Tobacco, Havanna, Cinnamon, Toast, Biscuit, Caramel, Copper…….it’s a far cry from the perception of boring old brown!

Stride out in Stripes

Can’t promise you they will make you go any faster, but there is something very sharp and snappy about a stripe. An energy about a stripe, why is that?

“The stripe doesn’t wait, doesn’t stand still. It is in perpetual motion, animates all it touches, endlessly forges ahead, as though driven by the wind”  says Michael Pastoureau fashion historian. There is a rebelliousness about stripes, historically they were worn by those on the margins of society in mediaeval times jugglers or the devil! More recently stripes have become associated with freedom, youth and playfulness and even in the case of bankers stripes, a symbol of taste and status. But we’re not talking pinstripe here girls…
But I’ve got too much black I hear you say – add a bold stripe or print now and then wear with cream when the sun comes out.  So a striped top is a key piece to add into your wardrobe this spring with designers from Moschino, Sportmax, Malene Birger and Diane von Furstenberg all championing the graphic stripe, the bigger and bolder the better!
So get horizontal in the fashion department that is, and join the big bold stripe brigade.

Turquoise the colour of hope for 2010

Pantone 15-5519 Turquoise

Well it’s official. Pantone have declared that Turquoise, or more specifically 15-5519 is the colour of the year for 2010.

Precious as usual had been feeling for turquoise for some time now. As she viewed the Spring 2010 collections six months ago, this fresh and elegant colour kept catching her eye. Turquoise from deepest teal to palest duck egg blue kept appearing, and somehow it kept finding it’s way onto our orders. Attractive in all these shades, we started to fall a little in love with this rather versatile colour, which actually suits most complexions and hair colours. But there’s more to it. Turquoise also has a wonderful symbolism, one which Precious feels is very appropriate for now.

“In many cultures, Turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of color,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “It is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of color word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many – taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.”

According to the colour experts at Pantone Turquoise combines the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green and pairs nicely with any other color in the spectrum. We like it as a block colour as shown here at Sportmax so take a plunge into the cool, chic mystical waters of this hopeful new colour for Spring 2010.
